Google acquires social networking startup Angstro

Sun, Aug 29 17:09 PM EDT

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Google Inc has acquired Angstro, a startup that sorts news and information across social networks like Facebook, a spokesman for the leading Web search provider said on Sunday.

Palo Alto-based Angstro has developed applications to find photos on Facebook, combine Caller ID with LinkedIn profiles and other tools for Twitter, according to the company's website.

"The struggle for open, interoperable social networks is still only just beginning," Angstro co-founder Rohit Khare said in a blog post last week.

Google, which runs the top search engine in the United States with more than two-thirds of the market, did not disclose the terms of the agreement.

The Angstro deal underscores the importance to Google of social networks in an increasingly competitive Internet search arena which it dominates.

Last week, Google launched a website for users who want to sift through news, comments and other information on the Internet in real time, letting them follow conversations on social network hubs like Facebook and Twitter in one place.

Microsoft has also announced partnerships with Twitter and Facebook to provide real-time search results.

The buying of Angstro follows acquisitions by Google earlier this year of small startups like Plink, which makes visual search engines, and video broadcaster Episodic.

    Clearwire plans pay-as-you go service

Fri, Aug 27 19:22 PM EDT

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Clearwire Corp said on Friday that it is planning a pay-as-you-go service, representing a new customer segment for the high-speed wireless service provider.

The company, which is majority-owned by Sprint Nextel, currently focuses on so-called postpaid services where consumers pay a flat monthly fee for wireless data services for laptop computers.

Clearwire declined to give more details in following a statement flagging a conference call on Monday morning.

Bigger rival AT&T Inc recently started offering tiered service pricing instead of flat monthly fees for unlimited data services.

Clearwire is the first U.S. service provider to offer fourth-generation wireless services but its biggest rival, Verizon Wireless, is expected to follow suit with a 4G service later this year. Verizon Wireless is a venture of Verizon Communications and Vodafone Group Plc.

Studios sue to stop advertising on pirate web sites

Thu, Aug 26 21:37 PM EDT

    By Eriq Gardner

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Warner Bros. and the Walt Disney Co. have teamed up in a new legal effort to choke off the air supply of various web sites that post and index links to pirated movies.

The two studios are suing Triton Media, alleged to have provided advertising consulting and referrals for nine websites identified as "one-stop-shops" for infringing works.

Warners and Disney claim that Triton committed contributory copyright infringement and induced copyright infringement via their advertising assistance. The lawsuit indicates that Hollywood may be on the verge of expanding its hit-list of targets in the ongoing war against piracy.

The complaint was filed on Tuesday in U.S. District Court in California and is rather thin on specific details of Triton's services to these web sites.

Instead, it largely focuses on the misdeeds of the sites. The two studios identify www.free-tv-video-online.info, supernovatube.com, donogo.com, watch-movies.net, watch-movies-online.tv, watch-movies-links.net, havenvideo.com and piratecity.org as providing users access to content that has been unlawfully reproduced. The web sites are said to either host infringing content themselves or link to other third-party web sites that have infringing content.

All of these sites could themselves be liable for a contributory infringement claim, but the studios have instead decided to reach out even further by taking action against a larger business in Triton.

Triton allegedly enables these web sites to operate and has actual knowledge that the sites are participating in copyright infringement.

The two studios aren't the first to attempt to crack down on piracy by targeting so-called facilitators. Adult entertainment publisher Perfect 10 sued Mastercard and Visa in 2004, alleging the two credit card companies provided "crucial transactional support services" to pirate websites. A district court dismissed the case, and later the Ninth Circuit upheld it, determining that Perfect 10 had failed to support any theory of liability against the defendants.

Some legal observers have argued that Perfect 10 wasn't the "perfect plaintiff" to bring the case. It appears that Warners and Disney want to take a shot at being the very plaintiff that might expand the definition of contributory copyright infringement.

The studios are seeking unspecified monetary damages as well as an injunction that would prevent Triton from doing business with these web sites.

Wyclef Jean rejected as Haiti candidate

Fri, Aug 20 23:35 PM EDT

    By Joseph Guyler Delva

PORT-AU-PRINCE (Reuters) - Haiti's provisional electoral council ruled on Friday that hip-hop star Wyclef Jean did not meet a residency requirement to run as a presidential candidate in the nation's November 28 election.

Singer-songwriter Jean, 40, an international celebrity who is popular in his impoverished and earthquake-ravaged homeland, was rejected from the list of approved candidates read aloud by the council on Friday night.

Jean was among 34 presidential candidates vying for a spot in the election to choose a successor to President Rene Preval, who cannot run again after two terms. The council approved 19 candidates and rejected 15.

Jean said the council had ruled he did not meet the requirement that presidential candidates maintain five consecutive years of residency in Haiti prior to running.

He issued a statement saying he respectfully disagreed with the council's decision but accepted it and urged his supporters to do likewise.

"We must all honor the memories of those we've lost -- whether in the earthquake, or at any time -- by responding peacefully and responsibly to this disappointment," Jean said.

"I want to assure my countrymen that I will continue to work for Haiti's renewal; though the board has determined that I am not a resident of Haiti, home is where the heart is -- and my heart has and will always be in Haiti."

Jean, who left his impoverished homeland with his family to live in New York at the age of 9 and launched his music career in the United States, had presented arguments his lawyers said showed a "constant presence."

Among those approved to run were:

-Two-time Prime Minister Jacques Edouard Alexis

-Leslie Voltaire, a U.S.-educated urban planner and former minister

-Yvon Neptune, another former prime minister who served under former President Jean-Bertrand Aristide

-Well-known opposition leader and former first lady Mirlande Manigat

-Jude Celestin, the former head of the government's road-building outfit.

U.N. and Haitian police guarded the provisional electoral council headquarters in Port-au-Prince to prevent any trouble as feverish expectations mounted over which contenders would be on the confirmed list to run.

It was feared that Jean's exclusion and that of other contenders from the electoral race on legal grounds could stir political tensions and even possible violence.

Haiti, the poorest country in the Americas, is struggling to recover from the devastating January 12 earthquake that killed up to 300,000 people.
