Google launches Twitter workaround for Egypt

Mon, Jan 31 21:50 PM EST

By Alexei Oreskovic

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Google Inc launched a special service to allow people in Egypt to send Twitter messages by dialing a phone number and leaving a voicemail, as Internet access remains cut off in the country amid anti-government protests.

"Like many people we've been glued to the news unfolding in Egypt and thinking of what we could do to help people on the ground," read a post on Google's official corporate blog on Monday.

The service, which Google said was developed with engineers from Twitter, allows people to dial a telephone number and leave a voicemail. The voicemail is automatically translated into an audio file message that is sent on Twitter using the identifying tag #egypt, Google said.

Google said in the blog post, titled "Some weekend work that will (hopefully) enable more Egyptians to be heard," that no Internet connection is needed to use the service.

It listed three phone numbers for people to call to use the service.

Internet social networking services like Twitter and Facebook have been important tools of communications for protesters in Egypt who have taken to the streets since last week to demonstrate against the 30-year rule of President Hosni Mubarak.

Internet service has been suspended around the country and phone text messaging has been disabled.

A source familiar with the matter said Google, whose corporate motto is "Don't Be Evil," was not taking sides in the crisis in Egypt, but was simply supporting access to information as it has done with other services such as video website YouTube.

YouTube has been streaming live coverage of Al Jazeera's broadcasts of the events in Egypt.

Dozens of the so-called speak-to-tweet messages were featured on Twitter on Monday. The messages ranged from a few seconds to several minutes and featured people identifying themselves as Egyptians and describing the situations in various parts of the country.

"The government is spreading rumors of fear and of burglary and of violence," said one of the messages from an English speaker. "The only incidence of theft and burglary are done by the police themselves."

Google listed the following numbers for people to use the service: +16504194196 or +390662207294 or +97316199855.

Oprah's half-sister revelation rocks show's ratings

Tue, Jan 25 17:45 PM EST

By Marisa Guthrie

LOS ANGELES - If only every daytime talk show host had a long-lost half sister.

Oprah Winfrey scored her best ratings in nearly six years with Monday's show during which Winfrey revealed that she had a half-sister she never knew.

The installment of Winfrey's daytime talker averaged a 9.6 household rating (according to metered market weighted averages). That's the highest episode since Winfrey's post-Oscar party installment on February 28, 2005.

Winfrey teased the big reveal on her show last Friday promising a "shocking family secret" that she said "literally shook me to the core."

Winfrey's younger half-sister Patricia was given up for adoption by Winfrey's mother in 1963. At the time, Winfrey was living with her father and did not know her mother was pregnant. Of course, this is not the first personal detail that Winfrey has unveiled on her daytime show. She has also revealed that she was molested as a child and lost a baby at 14.

Mobile app industry to surge in 2011: Gartner

Wed, Jan 26 05:03 AM EST

Tarmo Virki, European Technology Correspondent

HELSINKI (Reuters) - Worldwide mobile application store revenue will almost triple to $15.1 billion this year, boosted by a surge in Google's Android market, research firm Gartner said on Wednesday.

Apple created the market for mobile online software stores with the iPhone store in mid-2008, scoring an instant hit that drove smartphone sales and reshaped the way mobile content is delivered.

"We estimate that Apple's App Store drove close to nine application downloads out of 10 in 2010 and will remain the single best-selling store ... through 2014, although to a lesser extent, as other stores manage to gain momentum," analyst Carolina Milanesi said.

Last week, Apple's App Store reached 10 billion downloads. Its closest rivals are Google's Android and privately held GetJar which sells software for all platforms and reached 1 billion downloads last June.

Android, offered free to cellphone vendors, was expected to become the world's most popular smartphone operating system this year as vendors like HTC, Motorola Mobility and Samsung Electronics roll out new models.

Gartner forecast 81 percent of all downloads this year will be made for free.

It said 16 percent of application store markets' $5.2 billion revenue was generated from advertising, a share it expected to nearly double to 30 percent by the end of 2014.

Facebook to unveil financials, raises $1.5 billion

Fri, Jan 21 19:47 PM EST

By Bill Rigby

SEATTLE (Reuters) - Facebook is preparing to open its books this year or early in 2012 to give investors a glimpse into the financial workings of the world's No. 1 social network, after it sealed an oversubscribed $1.5 billion round of financing led by Goldman Sachs.

The financing, $1 billion of which is from Goldman Sachs' overseas clients and $500 million from Goldman itself and Russian investment firm Digital Sky Technologies, gives the company a projected value of $50 billion, setting the stage for what could be one of the largest initial public offerings next year.

Facebook, founded in a Harvard dorm room in 2004, said it would begin to file public financial reports no later than April 30, 2012, in a statement detailing the new investment.

United States securities regulations require companies with more than 499 shareholders to disclose financial information whether they are publicly traded or not. Facebook expects to exceed that number some time this year.

The new funding was organized by investment bank Goldman Sachs, which raised $1 billion from non-U.S. investors in a fund that Facebook said was oversubscribed.

Goldman Sachs originally pitched the investment to U.S. investors, but switched focus to overseas clients as concerns grew that intense media coverage surrounding the offering could run afoul of U.S. securities laws.

Initial projections from Goldman Sachs in documents circulated to potential investors earlier this month indicated it was looking to raise up to $1.5 billion.

Facebook said it made a "business decision" to limit the offering to $1 billion, without explaining further. It said it had no immediate plans for using the money raised.

The company earned $355 million in net income in the first nine months of 2010 on revenue of $1.2 billion, according to a document distributed by Goldman Sachs to potential investors earlier this month, the only source of financial data on the company.

In December, Digital Sky Technologies, Goldman Sachs and some funds managed by Goldman invested $500 million in Facebook.

Facebook has more than 500 million users and is challenging big Web businesses like Google Inc and Yahoo Inc for users' time online and for advertising dollars.

Investors are increasingly eager to buy shares of Facebook and other fast-growing Internet social networking companies on private exchanges.
